Recommended/Required: Paddling Certification
We encourage teams to consider investing in river-paddling safety and skills courses such as the American Canoe Association's (ACA) Level 3 River Safety & Rescue course and ACA Level 3 River Kayaking (or equivalent). Depending on our summer scouting work, we may update this to require some sort of paddling certification.
Friend of Rootstock Racing and fellow adventure racer Eric Caravella is an ACA-certified River Safety and Rescue instructor, who offers packraft-specific skills and river safety training courses through his company, Packrafting Adventures.
Teams hoping to complete the full course (visiting all mandatory AND optional checkpoints) can expect to cover the following distances. Distance-specific estimates represent the cumulative distances for each discipline across multiple stages of the event. Most teams can expect to complete a shortened version of the course. Remember: route choice and navigational errors may result in different experiences and some extra miles!
